Economy/Job Creation
As an entrepreneur, I understand the struggles of the small business owner. Also, as a minority business owner, I understand the issues that need to be addressed within the 9th district to improve the chances of a small business succeeding in the current economic environment. If small businesses don’t have to worry about rising tax rates, they will be encouraged to spend money elsewhere whether it be on innovations or expanding and creating new jobs. I will persistently fight to keep taxes from rising so that small business owners can use the tax breaks or credits to reinvest in our community.
Charlotte was recently ranked in the top 10 of the 100 “Best Places to Live and Launch.” This ranking was based on cities picked for their vibrant lifestyles and opportunities for new businesses. With such a welcoming business environment, it should be our focus to bring renewable energy companies and technology based companies to the district and the state. Any type of cutting-edge technology company has sustainable viability for long term job creation.
Health Care
I support the plan enacted by Congress. Though it is not perfect, it provides a positive start to ensuring that all Americans have access to affordable coverage. I believe fundamental reform of our health care system is needed to control health care costs, increase quality and value, and improve access to coverage and care. Comprehensive health care reform must be deficit-neutral. Additionally, I am supportive of health care reform that allows the citizens of the 9th District to keep their current health care provider or choose a provider all while maintaining competition within the marketplace.
Coming from a small business background, I believe that insurance needs to be affordable for small business owners and their employees. The cost for small businesses and even the average American has become unmanageable. We need to focus on reform that lowers health care costs and covers all Americans.
Access to primary care providers that focus on preventive care is essential for all Americans and will lower unnecessary and costly emergency room visits. With the ability to schedule routine physicals and see a doctor at the first sign of a problem, the rate of those choosing emergency care as their primary form of health care would be lowered. Emergency room visits are expensive and are a contributing factor to the high cost of health insurance.
Finding the funding for this massive reform to our health care system has also been a challenge for our nation’s lawmakers. As Congressman for the 9th District, I would oppose any health care bill if there is a lack of a credible financing mechanism for the reform.
2nd Amendment
As a long time hunter, I firmly support every American's right to bear arms. I understand that in North Carolina, hunting is a popular sport. When elected, I will always defend American's rights to bear arms, and oppose laws that will or can affect this right for Americans.
Veterans
As the son of a Vietnam Veteran, I am fully supportive of our military’s efforts and taking care of them once they arrive home to North Carolina. I am committed to assisting veterans in the recognition they deserve and working for the benefits they so desperately need. The system for helping Veterans in North Carolina is slow and inefficient. I understand that we need to help homeless veterans get off the streets and provide them with the care that they deserve. Here in the 9th district there are 140,000 veterans that reside in the Charlotte Metro Area. There are 60,000 that live in Mecklenburg County alone. We have one veteran’s clinic that can treat over 20,000 veterans a year. Another clinic has been approved for completion in 2013. As a district and state, we need to open more Veterans clinics to better serve those that have served our country.
Transportation
While the Charlotte region has come a long way in developing our transportation system, there is still much to be done. District 9 would benefit from a stronger transportation system that would meet the needs of North Carolinian families to have safe and accessible highways that connect them with work, home, and school. As Congressman for the 9th district, I would work to secure funding that would allow us to build more light rail transit lines. This would help combat local traffic congestion and to help lower the impact that District 9 has on the environment.
Education
District 9 needs to bring our education system up to 21st century standards. Our students, starting from pre-kindergarten all the way to college graduates, need to be provided with an education that will make them competitive in high tech, high wage jobs that have been created in this global economy. It is our responsibility as adults and parents to ensure that all students have the capacity to succeed in a college environment. Our schools must better prepare our children for higher education, and as a district, we need to make sure that higher education is financially attainable to all who are accepted to college.
It is impossible to achieve the standard of education that we desire without first rewarding educators with the salaries they deserve. Teachers today are grossly underappreciated and underpaid considering the importance and the demands their job. One way to combat this issue is providing tax-breaks or tax credits for non-paid hours of curriculum time. The ‘No Child Left Behind” act has serious flaws that forces teachers to ‘teach for the test.’ I believe that ‘No Child Left Behind’ needs to be properly funded or replaced by a better system that allows funds to be better used for classrooms and teachers instead of educational bureaucracy.
I am also a firm believer in having a choice as to where to send our children for school. Home-schooling has become more popular recently with Mecklenburg County ranking second in the state for amount of home-schooled students. Home schools, charter schools, and private schools should all be viable options for our children. All children are unique and all have different needs.
Environment
Climate change is a daunting issue, one that will surely be around for generations to come. Members of Congress have the important responsibility of coming up with legislation that will directly impact the environment and how America is seen when it comes to addressing climate change. When elected, I will be fully supportive of any plan that will help America reduce or eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. Additionally, not enough resources have been invested in the development of alternative energy technologies. As a country, we need to give incentives to those companies that are leaders in clean energy solutions. As a district, we need to reduce our carbon emissions and improve our energy efficiency. I am a strong supporter of the President’s plan to significantly improve the amount of renewable energy our country generates by 2025.
